E.M.D. 9
Weight: 26 lbs
MSRP: $499 Bicycling Review
Issue: Nov 2009
Page: 80 Editorial Review
Introduced in 2006, Niner's E.M.D. 9 (Eat My Dust) was conceptualized as a bare-bones, 7005 aluminum 29er frame with a low price. That mission continues with the current E.M.D.: Today's frameset costs the same $499 as the original.
1. The S-bend rear triangle is like that found on the higher-priced Air 9 hardtail, with different butting lengths and wall thicknesses for each size frame. Not only do the curving stays provide extra heel and mud clearance, but the design also delivers a more-refined, less-harsh ride over stutter bumps and square-edged hits compared with straight-tubed seat-and chain-stays. This means not every bump on the trail feels like a lightning jolt through your spine. 2. Niner has 29-inch-wheel geometry down to a science. The E.M.D. 9 exhibits surefooted confidence in slow, technical rock gardens yet retains its ability to attack high-speed sections without hesitation. Even with a midrange parts build, our size-medium test bike weighed a mere 26 pounds. That's on par with some 29ers costing twice as much. The bike is a spirited climber thanks in part to its low weight, but also because its rider is perfectly positioned to put every inch of fight into forward momentum. 3. RockShox's Reba fork is quickly becoming the top choice for big-wheel riders. The Reba 29 SL's dual-air spring and Motion Control damping perform well for aggressive cross-country riding, and it is lighter than its main competitor. 4. Bigger wheels carry more weight and momentum. Because of that, we'd trade a few grams of weight and a few more dollars, and make the upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes. By today's standards, these cable-actuated discs are nearly relics. 5. Each frame comes from the factory with a reamed head tube and seat tube; faced head tube, bottom bracket and disc tabs; and chased bottom-bracket threads so, according to company founder Steve Domahidy, it can be built as is, with no additional prep needed. BUY IT IF: You want a 29er that can go budget or luxe FORGET IT IF: You're a full suspension advocate
